Hong Kong has stepped up its pet-friendly policies by allowing cats and dogs on its light rail trains starting next month.

As part of the two-month trial, cats and dogs will be allowed on light rail during weekends and public holidays, as long as they are carried in a carrier or backpack (and pay HK$99 - approximately US$13).

The move will expand furry friends’ travel options and is overdue, considering Hong Kong recorded the highest per capita on pet care the Asia-Pacific region in 2021. The number of pets surged by 50,000 to 1.19 million from 2018 to 2023.
